About the course

This course builds upon students’ existing knowledge of functions and their developing awareness of change rates. They will address problems involving geometric and algebraic representations of vectors, as well as representations of lines and planes in three dimensions. The expansion of their understanding of rates of change will encompass derivatives of polynomial, sinusoidal, exponential, rational, and radical functions. These concepts and skills will be applied to model real-world relationships. Additionally, students will enhance their grasp of the mathematical procedures crucial for success in senior mathematics. Tailored for students interested in professions in science, engineering, economics, and certain business sectors, as well as those anticipating university-level courses in calculus, linear algebra, or physics. Calculus Vectors (MCV4U)

KAI Global School offers what we call “Collaboration Credits”.
These credits involve an approved third party to meet the practical requirements of the Curriculum Expectations of a course.

KAI Global School tracks the expectations, verifies the third party and communicates with the third party to verify hours and curriculum expectations are met. KAI provides any theory or missing expectations via way of lessons, discussions and projects. KAI will administer a Rich Summative Task and/or Exam worth 30% of the final grade.

Unit One: Introduction to Derivatives (26 Hours)

In this unit, students will engage with problems related to rates of change and the concept of limits. The unit briefly explores the relationship between a secant line and a tangent line to a curve to further investigate the concept of a limit. While students have previously focused on finding the tangent slope at a fixed point, this section introduces determining a tangent slope function, mirroring the process with a secant slope function. The final skill and topic in this unit involve sketching the graph of a derivative function.

Unit Two: Applications of Derivatives (27Hours)

In this unit, students will address various types of problems individually, including Pythagorean Theorem Problems (such as ladder and intersection problems), Volume Problems (typically involving filling or emptying a 3-D shape), Through Problems, Shadow problems, and General Rate Problems.

Unit Three: Intro to Vectors (27 Hours)

In this initial unit of the course, we delve into four key topics. First, an introduction provides insight into vectors and scalars. We then explore the properties of vectors, followed by an examination of vector operations. The unit concludes by delving into the properties of plane figures.

Unit Four: Lines and Planes (27Hours)

Show Examples

This unit commences with students determining the vector, parametric, and symmetric equations of lines in R2 and R3. Additionally, students will ascertain the vector, parametric, symmetric, and scalar equations of planes in 3-space. The curriculum further covers understanding the intersections of lines in 3-space and the intersections of a line and a plane in 3-space. Students will master determining the intersections of two or three planes by establishing and solving a system of linear equations with three unknowns.

Moreover, students will define terms related to matrices, including addition, subtraction, and multiplication. They will proficiently solve systems of linear equations involving up to three unknowns, utilizing row reduction of matrices, both with and without the aid of technology. An essential concluding focus involves interpreting row reduction of matrices as the creation of new linear systems equivalent to the original. These topics constitute the final components of this comprehensive unit.

This exam is a proctored three-hour assessment and serves as the concluding evaluation, covering various aspects of the course and contributing significantly to the student's final mark.

By the end of this course, students will:

  • demonstrate an understanding of rate of change by making connections between average rate of change over an interval and instantaneous rate of change at a point, using the slopes of secants and tangents and the concept of the limit;
  • graph the derivatives of polynomial, sinusoidal, and exponential functions, and make connections between the numeric, graphical, and algebraic representations of a function and its derivative;
  • verify graphically and algebraically the rules for determining derivatives; apply these rules to determine the derivatives of polynomial, sinusoidal, exponential, rational, and radical functions, and simple combinations of functions; and solve related problems.
Derivatives And Their Applications

By the end of this course, students will

  • Make connections, graphically and algebraically, between the key features of a function and its first and second derivatives, and use the connections in curve sketching;
  • Solve problems, including optimization problems, that require the use of the concepts and procedures associated with the
    derivative, including problems arising from real-world applications and involving the development of mathematical models.

Strategies for Assessment

Assessment for learning will directly influence student learning by reinforcing the connections between assessment and instruction, and provide ongoing feedback to the student. Assessment for learning occurs as part of the daily teaching process and helps teachers form a clear picture of the needs of the students because students are encouraged to be more active in their learning and associated assessment. Teachers gather this information to shape their teaching environment.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Grade 12 HHS4U, Families in Canada examines issues and challenges facing individuals and families in Canada’s diverse society. In this course, students will draw on sociological, anthropological and psychological theories and research to examine factors affecting families and assess policies and practices intended to support Canadian families.Social sciences and humanities courses focus on the use of disciplined, structured inquiry to understand human beings, human behaviour, and human nature. These courses promote the use of reason as part of the structured inquiry process, while also recognizing the limitations of reason as a way of learning, knowing, and understanding.

  • Students interact in student-paced and instructor-paced interactive, engaging instructional lessons.
  • Encourage students to identify and question assumptions and values that underlie individual behaviour and family and social/cultural life.

Report Card

Student achievement will be communicated formally to students via an official report card. Report cards are issued at the midterm point in the course, as well as upon completion of the course. Each report card will focus on two distinct, but related aspects of student achievement.
First, the achievement of curriculum expectations is reported as a percentage grade. Additionally, the course median is reported as a percentage. The teacher will also provide written comments concerning the student’s strengths, areas for improvement, and next steps. Second, the learning skills are reported as a Needs Improvement, Satisfactory, Good and Excellent. The report card also indicates whether an OSSD credit has been earned.
Upon completion of a course, KAI global school will send a copy of the report card back to the student’s home school (if in Ontario) where the course will be added to the ongoing list of courses on the student’s Ontario Student Transcript. The report card will also be sent to the student’s home address.
